Tour Plan
01Early Morning: Pickup from Delhi
Your driver will arrive at your hotel or pickup location in Delhi between 2:30 AM and 3:30 AM depending on your chosen departure time. The exact pickup time is planned to ensure you arrive at the Taj Mahal just as the gates open at sunrise. This is the most important timing of the day and the team takes it seriously.
The drive from Delhi to Agra is approximately 200 kilometers via the Yamuna Expressway, one of the smoothest and fastest highways in India. The journey takes roughly 3 hours under normal conditions. Most travelers find it easy to rest or sleep in the vehicle during this early morning drive.
02Morning: Taj Mahal at Sunrise
You will reach Agra just before dawn. Your guide will meet you at the Taj Mahal entrance and accompany you inside as the gates open.
The Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1631 and 1648 in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who passed away during childbirth. Over 20,000 craftsmen from across India and Central Asia worked on its construction. The result is a monument so perfectly symmetrical and so delicately detailed that architects and historians have been studying it for centuries.
At sunrise, the white Makrana marble changes color with the sky. In the first minutes of daylight it can appear pale pink, then soft gold and eventually brilliant white as the sun rises fully. No two visits to the Taj at sunrise look exactly the same.
Your guide will take you through the main gateway, the Darwaza-i-Rauza, and into the garden complex laid out in the traditional char bagh pattern, divided by water channels that reflect the monument perfectly. You will walk toward the main platform, climb the steps and see the central tomb up close. Inside, the cenotaphs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal are surrounded by intricate marble screens and walls inlaid with semi-precious stones in patterns that have never been replicated anywhere.
Take all the time you need here. This is the moment the day was built around.
After your visit, return to a quality local restaurant in Agra for a proper breakfast.
03Mid Morning: Agra Fort
After breakfast, head to Agra Fort, located approximately 2.5 kilometers from the Taj Mahal along the River Yamuna. This massive UNESCO World Heritage Site was begun by Emperor Akbar in 1565 and expanded by subsequent Mughal rulers including Jahangir and Shah Jahan.
Inside the fort, you will explore Jahangir’s Palace, one of the most ornate residential buildings in Agra. You will see the Khaas Mahal, the private palace of Shah Jahan built in pure white marble. You will walk through the Diwan-i-Aam and Diwan-i-Khas, the public and private audience halls where the Mughal emperor held court.
Perhaps the most moving part of the Agra Fort visit is the small octagonal tower known as Musamman Burj. It was here that Shah Jahan was placed under house arrest by his own son Aurangzeb after a war of succession. Shah Jahan spent the last eight years of his life in this tower with only a small mirror positioned so he could catch a reflection of the Taj Mahal, the monument he had built for the wife he loved and lost. He died in this room in 1666.
04Late Morning: Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj)
A short drive from Agra Fort brings you to the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, built between 1622 and 1628. This tomb was constructed by Empress Nur Jahan for her father, Mirza Ghiyas Beg, the chief minister of the Mughal court.
It is often called the Baby Taj or the Jewel Box and both names are accurate. The entire structure is built in white marble and the walls are covered in intricate pietra dura inlay work using semi-precious stones including onyx, jasper, cornelian and topaz. The craftsmanship is extraordinary up close. Many architectural historians consider this tomb to be the prototype that directly inspired the design language of the Taj Mahal itself, which was built about two decades later.
05Afternoon: Lunch and Leisure
After your monument visits, enjoy lunch at a good local restaurant in Agra. Your guide can recommend options based on your preferences, from traditional North Indian cuisine to multi-cuisine restaurants frequented by international travelers. Lunch is at your own expense unless you have pre-selected an all-inclusive package.
The afternoon also offers optional time for shopping in Agra. The city is famous for its marble inlay work, leather goods and semi-precious stone crafts. Many of the artisans near the Taj Mahal still practice the same pietra dura techniques that were used to build the monument itself.
06Evening: Mehtab Bagh and Sunset View of the Taj Mahal
Before beginning the drive back to Delhi, stop at Mehtab Bagh, the Moonlit Garden, located directly across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal.
Mehtab Bagh was originally built by Emperor Babur as part of a series of gardens along the Yamuna. From inside the garden, you have a wide and unobstructed view of the Taj Mahal across the river. At sunset, the marble catches the warm light of the setting sun and turns a deep amber and orange. The sight is genuinely beautiful and far less crowded than the main monument complex.
This is the best spot in Agra for photography of the Taj Mahal as a whole structure, including its reflection in the river during the monsoon and post-monsoon months.
07Evening: Return Drive to Delhi
After Mehtab Bagh, your driver will take you back to Delhi. The return journey follows the same Yamuna Expressway route and takes approximately 3 hours under normal conditions. You will arrive back at your hotel or drop-off point in Delhi by late evening, completing a full day that most travelers describe as one of the most memorable of their lives.
