Tour Plan
016:00 AM: Pickup from Delhi
Your driver arrives at your hotel, airport or pickup point in Delhi at your confirmed time. An early departure is always recommended as it gives you the most time in Agra. The drive via the Yamuna Expressway, one of India’s finest 6-lane highways, takes around 3 to 4 hours. The morning road is smooth and most travelers rest comfortably during the journey.
029:30 AM: Taj Mahal
On arrival in Agra, your local English-speaking guide meets you and takes you directly to the Taj Mahal. Walking through the main gateway and seeing the Taj Mahal for the first time is a moment most travelers describe as genuinely overwhelming. The white Makrana marble, the perfect symmetry, the reflection in the central pool and the sheer scale of the monument are simply beyond what any photograph can prepare you for.
Emperor Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal between 1631 and 1648 as a tribute to his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Over 20,000 craftsmen worked on it. The walls are inlaid with lapis lazuli, jade, cornelian and topaz in intricate floral patterns. The main dome rises 73 meters above the platform. Your guide will walk you through the garden complex, the main platform and the interior of the tomb where the cenotaphs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal rest behind delicate marble screens.
0312:00 PM: Agra Fort
After the Taj Mahal, drive to Agra Fort, a massive UNESCO World Heritage Site built by Emperor Akbar in 1565. Inside, you will explore Jahangir’s Palace, the Khaas Mahal, the Diwan-i-Aam and Diwan-i-Khas. The most moving spot is the Musamman Burj tower where Shah Jahan spent his last years under house arrest, looking at the Taj Mahal through a small mirror. He died here in 1666 and was later buried beside Mumtaz Mahal in the Taj itself.
042:00 PM: Lunch
Enjoy lunch at a top-rated local restaurant in Agra. The local cuisine here is excellent. Do not miss the petha, Agra’s unique white pumpkin sweet, or the rich dal tadka and fresh rotis that make a North Indian lunch genuinely satisfying after a full morning of walking.
053:00 PM: Baby Taj and Optional Shopping
Visit the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah, the Baby Taj. Built in 1622 by Empress Nur Jahan for her father, this is the first Mughal monument built entirely in white marble and the first to use the pietra dura inlay technique that was later used on the Taj Mahal at a much grander scale. The detail work on the walls is extraordinary and the setting on the Yamuna river bank is quiet and beautiful.
After the Baby Taj there is optional time for shopping. Agra is known throughout India for its marble inlay crafts, leather goods and handwoven carpets. Watching local artisans replicate the same stone-inlay techniques used in the Taj Mahal is a genuine highlight that many travelers remember long after the trip.
Optional: Mehtab Bagh Sunset View
If time allows, stop at Mehtab Bagh before the return drive. This Mughal garden on the opposite bank of the Yamuna offers a wide, unobstructed view of the full Taj Mahal at sunset. The white marble turns deep amber and the sky behind it fills with color. It is one of the best photography spots in all of Agra and a peaceful way to end the day before heading back to Delhi.
064:30 PM to 7:00 PM: Return to Delhi
After completing the Agra sightseeing, your driver takes you back to Delhi via the Yamuna Expressway. The return journey takes about 3 to 4 hours depending on traffic conditions. You will arrive back at your hotel, airport or preferred drop-off point in Delhi by early to late evening depending on the itinerary option you chose.
